Undergraduate research project developed in partnership with São Carlos’s municipal waste collection team, featured in the local press at saocarlosemrede.com.br. Over six months, I contributed to a platform that rethought how the city plans and executes its recyclable waste collection operations.
What It Does
Recicle++ optimizes recyclable collection routes through algorithmic route planning, replacing a largely manual and time-consuming process with a data-driven system. Route coordinators can now define collection zones, visualize stops on a map, and generate optimized routes in minutes — work that previously took hours of manual coordination.
My Role
For six months, I focused primarily on building the administrative web panel used by route managers. This dashboard is the operational core of the system: it’s where coordinators create and manage collection routes, monitor team assignments, and track coverage across the city’s collection zones.
The panel was built with Next.js for a fast, responsive interface, Firebase for real-time data sync and authentication, and Tailwind CSS for a clean, maintainable UI. I was responsible for the full front-to-back integration of the panel — from designing the user flows to connecting it with the route optimization logic developed by the research team.
Impact
- Improved garbage collection team productivity by 35%
- Reduced route planning time by 40%
- Gave coordinators real-time visibility into routes and team assignments, replacing spreadsheet-based workflows
